Bicheno History
Bicheno is a picturesque town situated on the east coast of Tasmania, popular with holiday
makers and retirees for its mild climate, sunny weather and lovely beaches.
In the early 1800s it was a busy sealers port and by the mid 1850s it had become was
a thriving coal port. In the 1840s the town was named after James Ebenezer Bicheno the
Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land.
Waubs Bay Harbour was named after an aboriginal woman Waubadebar and enslaved by sealers in
the 1800s. A strong swimmer she became famous for rescuing 2 sailors when their boat was
wrecked 1km offshore. Years after Waubadebar's death the town honoured her by building a
grave overlooking the harbour.
